In Chicago’s industrial urbanscape, is it possible to grow sustainable food? Growing Change follows passionate Chicagoans as they learn how to farm in the city. In Windy City Harvest, students spend more time in gardens than in the classroom. This documentary examines the lives of people at the frontlines of Chicago’s budding local food movement. This short video was created in early 2009 by Mitra Sticklen and Christine Nielsen as a demo reel for a longer film about farming in Chicago. This youtube version is lower quality than the original (contact me for the higher quality version). Special thanks to Windy City Harvest, Fire Escape Films, and Judy Hoffman.

Devin’s First Diaper Change

The whole family came upstairs after Devin was born. I never saw people walk in a pack until that moment… and they walked right over to the baby as he was getting his first diaper changed. My mom and brother Rickey’s commentary about organic food vs. fast food is hilarious. (Who knew that in a mere 3 months after this video was taken, he’d have grown 6 inches longer and doubled his weight? Now, at 15 mos. old, he is 35″ tall and almost 30 pounds!)

BETTER, not bigger. This video explores how “biggering our life” has gotten the best of us, yet it offers an inspiring vision for a BETTER world filled with renewable energy, community, and organic food. It reflects a world where making a life is about living with purpose and meaning, where people share in the common wealth and return to a time where we operate our own enterprises locally that restore the planet and foster fair trade relationships amongst neighbors. In various ways, the video reflects the movement of people who operate their own restorative small enterprises captured in the book, ecopreneuring: Putting Purpose and the Planet before Profits by Lisa Kivirist and John Ivanko (www.ecopreneuring.biz).
